Program Description

Business Administration is an interactive experience. You’ll explore a broad mix of business options and then specialize in your third year in either materials and operations management or human resources.
Communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, interpersonal and organizational skills are developed in all years of the program. Through community partnerships you will apply your newly acquired skills to real-world projects. Examples include conference co-ordination, training program design, recruitment strategy development, market analysis, marketing plan creation, or conducting an operational productivity audit. These individual and team projects give you demonstrated experience, and provide you with valuable connections to potential employers.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the two-year program gain skills suitable for entry level positions within business, industry, not-for profit and retail sectors.

Graduates of the program come away with special¬ized skills in either human resources or materials and opera¬tions management, and qualify for advanced standing in their respec¬tive professional organizations. Program Description

This intense, interactive program prepares graduates with a blend of marketing knowledge and sales training. Students gain transferable skills in conducting presentations, writing, accounting and time management which are assets any career.
A common first-year curriculum of Business and Management Studies allows students to explore their interests and options. After one year, students have the option to trans¬fer their credits to a diploma in Business Administration or Accounting.

Interactive sales strategies begin in the second year. Hands-on role playing exercises are videotaped and critiqued. Students develop techniques for relationship building, consultative selling, and developing rapport as they learn to present both products and concepts. They also gain experience with customer rela¬tionship management (CRM) software, an essential business tool to manage sales territories and prospective clients.

An important component of the program involves interaction with employers for job shadowing and project work. Three mandatory job shadows per semester (third and fourth) help students investigate different industries. Students develop their skills to prospect by arranging these placements through their own initiative. Marketing projects build skills through practical experience. Students work with members of the com¬munity providing marketing expertise for non-profit organiza¬tions, businesses, and professional sports teams. Projects have included working with the Canadian Cancer Society, Gleaners Food Bank, the Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League, community events including the Ontario Hockey League All Star Game, Quinte Children’s Foundation, Bioniche, Web Marketing projects, and a wide range of projects with local businesses.

Portfolio development gives students the opportunity to market their own skills and achievements, including certificates and letters of appreciation from community organizations earned during the program. Portfolios can take many forms, from web page design to audio commercials. Managers from the business community conduct simulated job interviews to help students hone their job search skills. Graduates finish the program with an internship, launching their career with valuable work experience, employment references, and possible employment.

Note : Second-year students are strongly advised to obtain a valid driver’s licence in order to complete job shadow placement experiences and progress to their internship. An up-to-date passport is also recommended

Career Opportunities

Business-to-business salespeople and marketers are needed in a wide range of industries, including hospitality, medical, pharmaceutical, engineering, food and beverage, health care, computers, telecommunications, advertising, manufacturing, service and industrial and commercial, event planning, profes-sional sports and entertainment. Positions in large and small companies include account representatives and detailed or non-technical salespeople. Graduates are also prepared for a range of jobs in marketing, including in-house positions developing marketing strategies for manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and other employers. The training received enables many graduates to move quickly into managerial positions.

Program is modelled on certification standards of the Canadian Professional Sales Association (CPSA). Students in the program receive student membership in the CPSA. Upon completing two years of sales experience, graduates are eligible to apply for their Certified Sales Professional (CSP) designation through CPSA.

Embedded in all core courses are ecologically sustainable and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) models in order to create corporate and socially responsible managers. Green Business Management

This one-year Graduate Certificate program is the first of its kind in Canada. The program prepares students to become "green" business leaders and agents of change in the new green economic paradigm of People, Planet and Profit.

The unique curriculum and delivery method emphasizes the eco-logic and eco-nomic relationships among business, organizations, planet, people and communities. This program is ideally suited for individuals who are passionate about the environment, who currently own or manage an enterprise, entrepreneurs about to start a business or who are looking at green strategies for market advantage, government workers who are interested in greening their agency/workplace and environmentalists looking for work in the growing area of best green business practices.

This two-term, Full-time program is comprised of 20 hours of class time per week, including 10 hours of in-class courses and 10 hours of online courses.

Students design corporate ecological vision and mission statements, modelling corporate social responsibility and environmental responsibility for a future or existing business. Students create, analyze and implement personal, and corporate energy audits and develop criteria for green business report cards for an actual local business or organization. Students create green business ideas capitalizing on current green consumer trends and (green) business opportunities.

Students gain an understanding of the significance of the principles of deep ecology and Gaia consciousness as they pertain to one's core values. Students also learn the importance of nature as mentor, model and measure, as indicated through biomimicry. Students participate in relevant field work and client visits and engage with leading industry specialists, green business owners and other community leaders in sustainability.

Graduates assist businesses/organizations to assess, strategize, plan, lead and implement sustainable business practices. In addition, graduates identify and effectively communicate ways to green a supply chain and to incorporate the cradle-to-cradle supply chain model into a business or organization. Graduates are able to recommend a specific green marketing mix for the private and public sector. Graduates can effectively communicate the business case for sustainability to the public, employees, employers and other stakeholders. Graduates, as ecopreneurs, have the knowledge, skills and abilities to create a formal green business plan that includes a detailed green marketing, green operational and green financial plan for a green business opportunity of choice.

Public relations professionals are increasingly in demand as employers recognize the value of effective message creation and delivery to maintain a solid reputation. Graduates find positions working directly with clients, in public relations firms or work¬ing for government, hospitals, schools, businesses, advocacy groups and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Typical job functions for entry-level employees include writing news releases, organizing interviews and news conferences, creating visual presentations, and planning special events. There are many varied opportunities for employment as a PR specialist, promotions manager, fundraising coordinator, media relations specialist, public affairs expert, publicist, lobbyist, campaign manager, or one of many other related communica¬tions positions.

Public Relations students automatically obtain student mem¬bership in both the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) and the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC).

In this intensive, post-graduate program, students learn to write clear, targeted communications materials that deliver messages persuasively. Specific areas of study include: creating effective messages; building relationships with the media and other stakeholders; planning ¬special events; writing and researching communications materials; corporate and non-profit market¬ing; delivering persuasive presentations; preparing for media interviews; and handling crisis situations. Students also gain in-demand new media skills, including social media and graphics creation. Students learn to market themselves through develop¬ing job search and networking skills.

Smaller class sizes and a dedicated faculty combine to create a community of learning that includes a focus on new social media for virtual information exchange. Students finish the program with a four-week internship, which may open the door to future employment.

This one-year College Graduate Certificate program prepares students for an exciting and successful career in the ever-growing multi-billion dollar sport industry. No longer is simple "passion for the game" a qualification for entry: a specialized business education is required. Successful individuals in the modern sport business world are now always well-trained, educated and highly skilled. This program prepares students to work within the broader area of sport, particularly the management and business aspects of the industry.

In three levels of study, the curriculum provides cross-disciplinary training related to: sport marketing; corporate and ticket sales; sport sponsorship; sport economics; sport finance; entrepreneurship; event planning and management; sport business in the social context; customer service; legal aspects of sport; sport governance; project management; community sport issues; and, sport management professional preparation. In-class work includes case studies, role playing, optimal use of technology and a variety of practical assignments.

The design of the Sport Business Management program and its respective components is unique. Canada has professional sport franchises and more national governing sport bodies and multi-sport organizations than any other country in the world. The program balances sport-business management education with an intensive experiential work placement. Throughout the duration of the program, students must work a minimum of 16 hours per week within the sport industry, and knowing experience is key to future employment, most students take advantage and get many more hours under their belts.

This program is presented in a mobile notebook computing learning environment, enabling a hybrid course delivery with courses in-class and online. Graduates obtain mobile computing skills to interact in a collaborative fashion with peers and course leaders, allowing them to contribute immediately to an organization's goals using contemporary information technology tools.

Through an active advisory board of sport industry leaders and close relationships with employers, the program is continuously updated to meet the current demands of the sport industry. These relationships provide students with strong opportunities for networking, and bring influential industry leaders into the classroom to share their experiences. Upon graduation, students are well-prepared to begin working as a sport business professional.
